Strategic Lead for RE/ PSHE | Mrs A Glencorse (based at Scissett Middle School)

Aims of the curriculum

The PSHE programme of study is based on recommendations from the PSHE Association and DfE guidelines. It builds on the guidance set out in the 2014 National Curriculum framework.

It covers three main strands-health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world.  To ensure effective provision the compulsory elements of PSHE have been integrated within a broader programme which includes coverage of economic wellbeing, careers and enterprise education, personal safety, including the assessment and management of negative and positive risk.

These strands fulfil our statutory responsibility to ‘support pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life’, as set out in the Education Act 2002 (section 78) and the statutory safeguarding responsibilities, in line that ‘schools should ensure that children are taught about safeguarding, including online, through teaching and learning opportunities as part of a broad and balanced curriculum’. This also includes the promotion of fundamental British values.

Consideration has been given to the appropriate key stages and how it creates a spiral programme which embeds, revisits and deepens learning across the core themes. The framework identifies a broad range of important issues and thought has been given to providing a relevant context for pupils to both broaden and deepen their understanding of the key concepts that are most relevant to them whilst considering the pupils individual experience.

It is hoped that this provides a comprehensive, broad and balanced PSHE programme which meets the needs of emerging issues of our school, pupils and community.
